The Experience

What this journey is about and what you can expect.

The Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, designed for those seeking a true test of their physical fitness and determination. Known for its steep and direct ascent, the Umbwe Route can be completed in 5 to 6 days, though it’s not for the faint-hearted.

For climbers opting for the 5-day itinerary, the route offers no acclimatisation day, requiring a high level of fitness as you hike directly towards the summit. This makes it a preferred choice for those who want to push their limits and experience Kilimanjaro’s most demanding climb.

The Umbwe route connects with the Machame Route on the second day, transitioning from Umbwe Cave to Barranco Camp. Along the way, yo’ll pass through a variety of climatic Zones, starting in the dense rainforest, moving through the alpine zone (both low and high), and finally reaching the glacial zone near the Summit.

FAQs

Quick answers to common questions about this trip.

How long does the Umbwe Route take to complete?
The Umbwe Route can be completed in 5 to 6 days. The shorter, 5-day itinerary is more challenging as it does not include an acclimatization day, requiring a high level of physical fitness.
Is the Umbwe Route suitable for beginners?
No, the Umbwe Route is considered one of the most difficult and steep routes on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is best suited for experienced climbers or those looking for a physically demanding challenge.
What is the summit success rate on the Umbwe Route?
The Umbwe Route has a lower summit success rate of around 60% due to its steep ascent and lack of acclimatization opportunities.
What kind of landscapes can I expect on the Umbwe Route?
Climbers on the Umbwe Route will pass through a variety of landscapes, including dense rainforests, alpine zones, and eventually the glacial zone near the summit.
Why should I choose the Umbwe Route?
The Umbwe Route is ideal for those seeking a fast, steep, and direct ascent to the summit. It offers an intense challenge, stunning scenery, and the opportunity for climbers to push their physical limits. It's also suitable for those interested in speed ascents.
Where is Mount Kilimanjaro located?
Mount Kilimanjaro is situated in northern Tanzania, near the Kenyan border, within Kilimanjaro National Park.
Do I need technical climbing skills to summit Kilimanjaro?
No. Kilimanjaro is a non-technical climb, meaning no ropes or specialized climbing gear are required. However, good physical fitness and proper acclimatization are crucial to reach the summit successfully.
What happens if some members need to turn back before the summit?
No one is forced to go on. There is always enough staff to split the group accordingly to needs and regroup later at the camp. Most people have no trouble reaching the highest campsite. If some members decide not to climb the final distance to the peak or cannot proceed at any point in time, they can wait for the other group climbers to come back, or can go down with a guide following the same way, or take a lateral path to the descent route.
Can I hike Mount Kilimanjaro without a tour company?
No, you need a tour company when hiking Mt Kilimanjaro, because the minimum number of days to hike Mt Kilimanjaro is 5 days. During this time you need food, water, and someone to guide you and carry some of your needs (items/materials). All these services are provided by a tour company. The regulation was established to guide this activity and therefore TANAPA deals with Tanzania-registered tour companies when doing all climbing arrangements and not natural individuals.
Is airport transfer included?
Yes, we provide complimentary pick-up and drop-off from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport (ARK) for all our package bookings.
Do I need a Visa for Tanzania?
Most travelers need a visa. You can obtain an E-Visa online beforehand or a Visa on Arrival ($50 USD or $100 USD for US citizens). Please check your specific country requirements.
What about dietary requirements?
We cater to all dietary needs including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and halal. Please inform us at the time of booking so our chefs can prepare accordingly.
