The Sacred Mountain of God
Ol Doinyo Lengai, meaning "Mountain of God" in Maasai, has been an important natural and cultural landmark for centuries. Located in northern Tanzania, it is one of the most active volcanoes in East Africa and is the only volcano in the world that produces natrocarbonatite lava, commonly referred to as "cold lava."
Historically, Ol Doinyo Lengai has fascinated explorers, geologists, and local Maasai communities. The Maasai consider the volcano sacred, believing it to be the home of their gods. Its unique lava, dark and fluid at relatively low temperatures (510–600°C), has been studied extensively by scientists for its rare chemical composition.
The volcano has erupted roughly 15 times in the last century, with notable eruptions in 1917, 1940, and most recently in 2013. Despite its activity, the volcano is relatively safe for visitors due to its remote location and small size.
Lake Natron, located at the foot of Ol Doinyo Lengai, is a shallow, alkaline lake known for its bright red and pink colors, caused by algae that thrive in the highly saline water. The lake is a critical breeding ground for hundreds of thousands of lesser flamingos, making it one of the most important bird sanctuaries in East Africa.
The Maasai people historically relied on the lake and surrounding areas for grazing their cattle, while the lake itself has been an essential source of salt and minerals. Its unique environment supports a fragile ecosystem that is both dramatic and beautiful, attracting adventurers, photographers, and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world.
Oldonyo Lengai is an active stratovolcano. Ascents are physically demanding and strictly monitored based on current volcanic activity. Safety is our absolute priority, and climbs may be rescheduled if conditions are unsafe.
